Bual 1920

HERITAGE WINE COLLECTION

BLANDY'S BUAL 1920

The beginning of the 20th century was a time of great global uncertainty. Our records show that total wine exports fall from around 3.3 million litres annually, between 1910 and 1916, to below 1.3 million litres, in 1917 and 1918. Both the Great War and the Russian Revolution had a huge impact on Madeira wine production and sales, followed shortly after by prohibition in the United States.

The 1920 Bual is one of the family’s most iconic wines and to think this wine was crafted in the face of so many adversities is a real testament to the men and women working on the island at the time.

Over the years, different bottlings of the 1920 were released onto the market and all were unique in their own right – each separate bottling style naturally evolved by heat, humidity, cask size and location within our Wine Lodge in Funchal.

This 2020 release sets another landmark for Blandy’s as being a wine that has aged for 100 years in both American oak casks and, as from the 1st of March 2017, in glass demi-johns. Only 1,199 individually numbered bottles will be released of this centennial wine.

TASTING NOTES

Clear and bright dark mahogany colour with a golden nuance and greenish reflections.
On the nose it’s complex and very characteristic, it’s fine, intense, reveals a dry fruit bouquet, exotic spices, vanilla, smoked notes mixed with cedar oil and balsams.
On the palate it’s very concentrated and powerful, medium sweet, very balanced and soft, its leaves a very long aftertaste with tobacco notes, exotic woods, cedar oil and wax.
